Retaining Wall Engineering: Design And Analysis

Our motto is simple: never design a wall that cannot be inspected. We consider construction quality assurance to be an integral part of the wall designs. A small cost in the CQA pays off in the long-term performance of the wall. Walls fail when there are engineering or construction flaws. CQA inspections are the only tool to ensure that walls are built as per the plans and specifications.

SRW Wall Inspections

Construction Quality Assurance

It’s important to note that public wall projects are thoroughly inspected for performance issues. This is a testament to the value of proper construction quality assurance. At our company, we stand by our motto: never design a wall that cannot be inspected. We know that construction quality assurance is crucial to the success of any wall project. While it may seem like a small cost in the short term, it pays off in the long run by ensuring the wall’s longevity. It’s important to remember that walls fail due to engineering or construction flaws, and the only way to prevent these issues is through CQA inspections. We have the utmost confidence in our ability to deliver high-quality wall designs that stand the test of time.

Forensic Investigations

Settlement. Rotation. Tilting. Cracking. Distortion.

These are common signs of distress in a retaining wall. We are experts in finding the root cause no matter the wall type and failure mode. Was it a design or construction flaw? Did water contribute to distress? Was it due to poor soils? Is it due to poor construction? Poor quality materials? TGI can get to the bottom of it and recommend a clear path forward.

Notable Retaining Wall Projects

Moreland Hills, OH, Geoweb Wall:

This is an example of one of our many retaining walls with Geoweb fascia that is planted with vines to be fully vegetated. Geoweb walls are a perfect candidate for beautiful and aesthetically pleasing appearance for your wall. There is no limit to the wall height and almost any retaining wall can be designed with Geoweb fascia. Since 2005, TGI has designed numersous walls with Geoweb fascia.

Spicewood Fire Station, Spicewood, TX, SRW Wall:

A highly ambitious segmental block wall project with building loads right over the wall and wall height exceeding 15 ft.  TGI prepared the design for the wall and had it peer-reviewed to ensure that there are no concerns with the engineering. During construction, TGI performed periodic inspections. For more than 3 years, the wall has been performing very well and the owners are very pleased with it.

Fellowship Church Structural Engineering - SRW Wall Design

Fellowship Bible Church, Roundrock, TX, Rubble Masonry Wall:

A rubble masonry wall around the main church building had failed and TGI was asked to design a simliar wall considering all site constraints. With a very close proximity to the building, the engineering of this wall required careful attention to detail and a superab workmanship by the wall builder. Under TGI guidance and leadership, the finished wall looks excellent and the owners are very pleased with it.

Jones Creek, Richmond, TX, Gabion Wall:

TGI assisted with a peer review of the design and then performed CQA inspections for this highly visible project. As a  replacement for the original wall that had failed, TGI played a leadership role from start to finish. Crucial to the success of the project was peer review construction quality assurance. The success of this reconstruction project shows the importance of good engineering and CQA.

Hunters Ridge, Houston, TX, Redi-Rock Retaining Wall:

Built on the bank of Buffalo Bayou, between the back of the house and the flow line of the bayou, this was a very difficult and complex wall, with high impact of water, no geotechnical data, and poor soils underneath. The wall withstood three flood events, including hurricane Harvey, albeit with some settlement. This project was later re-shaped and re-designed to alleviate some load on it and is currently performing very well.
